25 Last-Minute Halloween Costume Ideas Using Clothes, Props, and Craft Supplies

Halloween has a way of showing up faster than anyone plans for, and this is the list for the year it caught you again.

Some of these start with clothes you already own, while others need props, pantry items, or craft supplies.

Here are 25 costume ideas to choose from based on what you have and how much time you can spare.

My favorite is #17, the Zombie Baseball Player!

1. The Cowboy

1. The Cowboy

Grab a plaid shirt, your oldest jeans, and any boots you own. A hat pulls the whole thing together, but even without one, tucking the shirt into jeans with a wide belt reads as cowboy from ten feet away. This is the costume to hand a reluctant teenager who wants credit for trying without actually trying.

2. The Librarian

2. The Librarian

A cardigan, glasses, and a book under one arm is the whole costume. We like giving this one a stern expression instead of props, since the look sells itself once someone starts shushing people. Add a pencil behind the ear if you want one more detail.

3. The Classic Baseball Player

3. The Classic Baseball Player

Pull on a cap and a jersey-style tee, and you’re most of the way there. Two swipes of black eyeliner under the eyes does the eye-black job, or use actual eye black if you have it. Tube socks pulled up high and a glove, if you own one, finish it off.

4. The Lumberjack

4. The Lumberjack

An oversized flannel, baggy jeans, work boots, and a beanie. Bonus points for a foam axe from a party store, though the shirt alone gets the reference across. Pick this one if you already have an oversized flannel hiding in the closet.

5. Wednesday Addams

5. Wednesday Addams

All black, braided pigtails, and a completely flat expression. Kids especially love this one because the “acting” part is refusing to smile all night, which most of them find hilarious rather than hard. Skip the elaborate collar most tutorials suggest. A plain black dress does the job.

6. The Umpire

6. The Umpire

An all-black or navy polo, black pants, and an umpire mask if you have one. A chest protector adds another baseball-specific detail. Fold a scrap of paper into a “lineup card” for the shirt pocket and someone will notice.

7. The Cat

7. The Cat

Black clothes, drawn-on whiskers, and ears made from a headband and felt or construction paper. It’s the costume you fall back on when nothing else in the closet cooperates, and it never looks like a fallback. Add a black-and-white striped top instead of solid black for a slightly different silhouette.

8. The Fairy

8. The Fairy

Florals, a crop top, and fishnets if you have them, with wings from craft supplies or a thrifted pair. Layer a sheer scarf or curtain panel over a skirt for movement. This one rewards whatever sparkly or mismatched pieces have been sitting in a drawer waiting for an excuse.

9. The Peanut Vendor

9. The Peanut Vendor

A plain button-up, an apron, and a bow tie. Turn a shoebox into a vendor’s tray with a ribbon strap over the shoulder, and fill it with napkins or bagged peanuts for the walk-around effect. A paper soda-jerk hat is a nice extra if you have one lying around from a party.

10. The Tourist

10. The Tourist

A Hawaiian shirt, a camera or phone on a lanyard, shorts, and sandals. A folded map or guidebook in one hand finishes it. If your vacation clothes are still tucked away together, start there and see which pieces you can use.

11. The Vampire

11. The Vampire

All black, ideally something with a little drama to it like a leather jacket, and fake blood at the corner of the mouth. Skip the plastic fangs. The fake blood gives you a vampire detail without having to keep plastic teeth in your mouth all evening.

12. The Retro Baseball Player

12. The Retro Baseball Player

A cream or gray pinstriped jersey with a round neckline, pants tucked into tall socks to fake the old knicker-style cut, and a rounded cap instead of a modern flat-brim one. It leans more costume-y than the classic player version, which makes it a good pick if that one’s starting to feel a little played out at your house.

13. Pam From The Office

13. Pam From The Office

A pencil skirt, a blouse, and a cardigan draped over the shoulders. Carry a stack of papers or a coffee mug and hold a mildly exasperated expression the entire night. This one works best on someone who already has “done with this” as a resting face.

14. The Cereal Killer

14. The Cereal Killer

A white shirt, a handful of mini cereal boxes taped on, and red food coloring dabbed on like blood.

15. The Ballpark Hot Dog

15. The Ballpark Hot Dog

Beige or tan clothing as the “bun,” a strip of brown felt down the front for the sausage, and wavy red and yellow felt glued on top for ketchup and mustard. It sounds fussier than it is. Glue and pins hold the whole thing together in under an hour with no sewing.

There’s a full section on ballpark snacks, from stadium classics to copycat recipes, in the Game Day Kitchen part of our Baseball Family Fun Pack, if this one gets you thinking about food more than costumes.

16. Princess Buttercup

16. Princess Buttercup

A red dress or robe cinched with a belt is most of it. Loose, slightly messy hair sells the rest. Pick this one if you already own something red and flowing.

17. The Fried Egg

17. The Fried Egg

A white shirt with a painted yellow circle on the front. Pair it with someone wearing a red bandana as “bacon” and you’ve got an instant duo costume with almost no effort on either end. Paint pens work better than fabric paint if you want the yellow to stay crisp.

18. The Zombie Baseball Player

18. The Zombie Baseball Player

An old jersey or uniform, fake blood, and a crumpled white-paper half-ball with red marker stitches make the zombie look. Flatten the paper prop’s base and tape it to the cap while it’s off your head. This is the one item on this list we’d actually recommend over the classic version if your household already has a beat-up jersey nobody’s precious about anymore. It’s more work than most items here, so leave time for the cap prop.

19. The Film Producer

19. The Film Producer

An all-black outfit, oversized sunglasses, a scarf, and a clipboard or notebook. Add a coffee cup as a prop and you’re set. It’s a costume that reads as “someone important” without anyone having to explain who.

20. The Sushi Roll

20. The Sushi Roll

An all-white outfit with a colored pillow belted on, plus chopsticks as a handheld prop. It looks more complicated in photos than it actually is to build. This one tends to be a hit with kids who like a costume that doubles as a joke.

21. The Baseball Card Collector

21. The Baseball Card Collector

A flannel or vest with pockets, an old three-ring binder, and a magnifying glass if you can dig one up. It’s less about the look and more about the props, so lean into carrying the binder around like it’s worth something. This one is for the household with a shoebox of old cards in a closet somewhere.

22. The 80s Workout Instructor

22. The 80s Workout Instructor

Bright leggings, a leotard or an off-shoulder sweatshirt, a headband, leg warmers, and a scrunchie. Wristbands complete it if you have them. This is a good costume for someone who’s willing to commit to a little bit of a bit, since half the fun is the energy that comes with it.

23. The Paper Princess

23. The Paper Princess

A construction-paper crown, cut and taped together in a few quick minutes, paired with whatever the wearer already considers their fanciest outfit. It’s the costume for a last-minute kid who wants to feel dressed up without any actual sewing or gluing involved. Add glitter glue to the points if there’s time for it to dry.

24. The Backyard Ballplayer

24. The Backyard Ballplayer

A grass-stained tee, a cap worn backwards, and a well-loved mitt. This one is about the memory more than the accuracy, the kind of thing that looks like it came straight out of a summer evening of catch in the yard. Skip anything that looks too clean. A little dirt is the point.

25. The Bottle Of Wine

25. The Bottle Of Wine

A long green or burgundy outfit forms the bottle, with a paper label reading “Wine” taped to the front. Tape a brown-paper cork shape to a headband for the top. It’s silly, it’s fast, and it’s the costume that ends this list the same way most closet scrambles end: laughing at how it turned out.

Whatever you land on, start with what’s already clean and within reach, and build outward from there instead of starting with an idea and shopping to match it. Check the drawers and craft bin before making a shopping list.
