For fans who witnessed it, Jose Guillen’s throw will forever be known as “The Throw.”

In a game full of moments, Guillen’s astonishing play at Coors Field on that fateful Monday night in 1998 stands out as a highlight for the ages.

But the question remains: Is this still the best throw you’ve ever seen?

In the third inning, Rockies shortstop Neifi Perez hit a deep fly ball to right field. What looked like a sure hit turned into one of the most spectacular plays in baseball history.

Guillen, the Pirates’ right fielder, made a leaping catch at the wall.

But that was just the beginning.

Guillen picked up the ball after it bounced off his shoulder and unleashed an absolute rocket from the warning track to second base.

The ball sailed 360 feet in the air, landing perfectly in the glove of second baseman Freddy Sanchez.

See it for yourself:

Perez, who had rounded first and was heading for second, was tagged out, leaving everyone in awe.

Veteran catcher Keith Osik, who caught the relay throw, described his reaction: “I thought, ‘Oh, my gosh!’ I kept waiting for it to bounce, but it just kept coming. I thought, ‘I’ve got to catch this ball!’”

Guillen, still in disbelief after the game, said, “I still cannot believe I made that throw. That was incredible.”

Pirates manager Gene Lamont praised the play, saying, “I think everybody was in shock. It was like they couldn’t believe what they’d just seen. It was amazing.”

The game itself was a thriller, with the Pirates taking an early lead thanks to home runs by Guillen and Jason Kendall.

Todd Van Poppel kept the Rockies in check for five innings, but Colorado made a comeback in the sixth. The Pirates ultimately held on to win 13-11, but it was Guillen’s throw that stole the show.

Fast forward to 2024, and the debate still rages on: Is Jose Guillen’s throw still the best you’ve ever seen? This is the kind of play that makes baseball the incredible sport that it is.
